We see many species, including starfish, sand dollar, bay scallops. Whelks. Conchs up to 212" long. Seahorses, Urchins. Hermit crabs. These animals can be brought up to the surface, handled gently, and photographed. We bring large containers so that snorkelers, as well as non-snorkelers, can get close to the animals before they are released into the bay. The shells of non-living creatures can be taken home.
It is worth the wait once you arrive. It is truly breathtaking. It's like swimming in an ocean. We didn't really know what we were getting into so we planned to spend just a few hours on this island. Do not expect to spend the entire day here!
Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, swimming with spinner dolphins at rest could be considered "harassment." This Act prohibits any act that could disrupt the behavior of a marine mammal by causing torment, harassment, or other nuisances.
Shell island beach was visited twice by us. The first time we paid $7.50 to park on the "island". We drove a bit further along the coast to Llanddwywe, where we found a public parking lot. It is a beautiful, clean beach.
