The condos are surrounded with asphalt and building materials which cause brownish storm runoff from the rain. Shell Island's water is cleaner than any other beaches. The St. Andrews State Park Campground Camp Store offers beach bike rentals. You can ride around the campground loops, park roads and on the 2-mile paved bike path that runs through the park. This is a great place to spot deer and other wildlife in the park. Two short, easy trails allow for close inspection of the coastal scrub habitats and native pine forest.
Shell Island gives you the chance to see old Florida before tourism took over. While we love serving our tourists to share the Florida experience and being there for them, it has become too crowded. Shell Island offers a different experience than Panama City Beach. But you need to go there in order to fully experience the island.
Shell Island is seven miles of undeveloped scenery between the Gulf and St. Andrew Bay. At one point, Shell Island was inhabited by Native Americans, Spanish Settlers, and even pirates.
Shell Island is a nature preserve with no restrooms or any other visitor facilities such as trash receptacles, picnic tables, or shade pavilions. There is no trash removal service. Island visitors are asked to be responsible and take everything they bring to the Island with them when they leave.
