How To Dive Sidemount
Backmounted doubles were created in response to problems with single orifice and backmounted independences. Independents consist of two cylinders, each with its own regulator. The diver could only use one cylinder if a first stage failed. Single orifice duals consisted of two cylinders linked by a valve. One regulator was used for the first stage. The gas would not be released if the first stage failed due to a failure of one orifice doubles. Both of these problems have been eliminated by today's isolated manifold duplicates. Each cylinder is capable of being worked separately, but the diver can use one regulator to allow him or her to inhale gas directly from both cylinders. This type of doubles is usually held together using metal bands. Additionally, the valves are linked by an isolation manifold which allows the two to be separated as needed. Backmounted doubles diving looks similar to regular single cylinder backmounts, but it has a profile that is vertically identical.
Rebreathers allow for greater diving ability by eliminating large cylinders. Instead, they recycle the gas exhaled by divers, scrub the CO2 and inject small amounts of gas. This can greatly increase the time it takes to dive, especially if you are doing deeper dives. Rebreathers can either be sidemounted or back, and their profile is determined by the configuration.
You can learn the SSI technical diver course and dive with up to four tanks (cylinders), for extended dives. The technical sidemount diver class is a great way for you to start technical diving. You will learn how to manage multiple cylinders during one dive. Also, learn how to configure your sidemount gear and set up a tec harness.
The very general definition of technical diving is to be exposed to a ceiling that does not allow a diver to ascend to the surface at any moment of the dive. This might be due to a real ceiling, in terms of a cave or a wreck, or a virtual ceiling created by a decompression obligation. In this case, by exceeding the NDL’s, mandatory decompression stops have to be performed on ascent in order to avoid any case of decompression sickness. In most cases this requires the use of special equipment, e.g. Twinsets or Sidemount, special gas mixes and of course additional training to be able to perform those stops accurately on ascent to optimize off-gassing of Nitrogen.
The advantages of Sidemount diving are an additional independent air source as you are diving with two tanks each with a first stage, SPG, and regulator. This makes it a lot safer and gives little air-hogs like myself a whole lot more air. I also found diving with Sidemount to be incredibly comfortable because you can easily don tanks on the surface and there is no pressure on your back.
Skills (specific): Throughout tech programs, the dive skills specific to that category are practiced until they become flawless. Line skills and navigation are perfected for overhead diving. Decompression divers can execute stops and manage gas without blinking an ear. Rebreather divers take great care in building, testing and disassembling their equipment to ensure its optimal functionality. The first level of certification lays the foundation for each course, with further training as necessary. Each step takes you deeper, or makes these skills more difficult. It is a way to become a better diver.
