The report was created by members of the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association (Mexico Wildlife Commission) and assessed the impacts on the reefs. The reef near the Varmar, which is not shown on the dive map due to its location off Mexico Beach, had the greatest impact. It was only 25 feet deep and contained 35% of the original reef material. In 1985, a Navy hovercraft that measured 100 feet fell apart. The twin aluminum pontoons still stand 10 feet off the ocean floor and are in excellent condition. The hovercraft is quite unusual and would not be considered a dive site unless it was so close to Black Bart. You can still swim laps and glide up and down the stairs.
