Fiber lasers have wavelengths of 1.06 microns. This wavelength is 10 percent lower than the CO2 laser beam. Fiber lasers have a much shorter wavelength which makes them more able to absorb reflective material. CO2 lasers are more likely reflect off these surfaces. Fiber laser cutting machines can be used to cut brass and copper as well as other reflective materials. The machine's laser beam, as well as the beam path, can be damaged by a CO2 laser beam reflected off the material. This risk is eliminated if the beam path is used with a fiber optic cable.
Perhaps you have noticed that we haven’t yet discussed cutting speed. Although it is possible to cut 500 inches per minute with a tube, this is not always feasible. Laser tube cutting should not be about how long it takes for a tube to be loaded, indexed so that it is in the right place for cutting, pierce it and then unload it. We haven't talked about cutting speed, you may have noticed. You can cut up to 500 inches per hour on a tube but it's not always possible. Some things are difficult to see until you have a closer look at the fiber laser operating. Fiber lasers have a larger power density than CO2 laser beams because their beam diameter is typically one-third that of CO2 beams. This allows fiber to cut more quickly and also allows it pierce better. This allows the fiber to cut intricate shapes with sharp edges and leaves a smaller beam size. Imagine that a fiber can cut the company logo from a tube with spacing of 0.035 in between its letters; a CO2 laser is incapable of doing this.
