Sheet laser cutting machines are now sold with laser generating technology capable of delivering as much as 12 kW of power. A laser tube cutting machine typically tops out at 5 kW because any more power would simultaneously cut through the opposite side of the tube.

The CO2 reactor is larger and consumes more energy. To produce the laser beam, electricity is added to a mixture gas mixture. Mirrors are used to increase the intensity of light, and prepare it for exiting a resonator. The beam must travel through the path of several cooled reflectors until it reaches lens once it has left the resonance. This travel can cause a loss of power or quality in the laser beam.

There are no standard material towers with a laser tube cutting machine. Bundle loaders, the most efficient of the tube material handling options, feed one tube at a time from the bundle into the tube laser via a singularizing system. This type of feeding mechanism doesn’t work with open profiles, such as angles or channels, because they interlock while in a bundle and don’t come free easily. For open profiles, step loaders are used, which sequence a section one at a time into the machine while keeping the correct orientation of that section.
