Beam drill lines are important tools in medium to large-sized structural fabrication shops. Beam drill lines accurately drill holes in a variety of steel profiles at different lengths with CNC controlled programming. These machines eliminate the need to manually chalk or layout the positions and produce the hole by hand with a mag drill, punch, or plasma. We train every operator on how to operate the machine using Peddimat. This is because you may be faced with a situation where a customer has a couple of pieces that need holes or layout marks. You want to be able produce these quickly and without disturbing your detailing staff, who might be working on a larger project.

Voortman has developed today's CNC beam standard drill line using tried-and-true technology. Advantage-2 processes 150 ton of steel per workweek with the most efficient drilling/milling, scribing/taping, and countersinking operations.

Milling

Even if you are programming the CNC Drill Line manually, it is easy to program. Peddimat machine programming software can be used and most operators will learn how to program most of the parts in under an hour. Of course practice makes perfect. It is best to program the machine by importing parts directly from a 3-D modeling program such as ProSteel 3D, StruMis, Tekla Structures, SDS/2 or StruMis. These files are imported directly into your machine. Once you have selected the part, hit the Cycle Start button.

We believe that, at this time, based upon the prices from different suppliers, the customer would be better off with high-quality Ocean Penetrator turn drill bits as well as a quality sharpener.

The MultMaster works as an extension of the Roller Feed measurement system in order to perform cuts which may otherwise require manual positioning for programs with many small pieces. This accessory allows fast and simple material processing on a Voortman drill and saw tandem system by automating the processing of short remnant sections.

It doesn't matter if a CNC drill isn't able to position a steel fabricator to be competitive in the steel fabrication market. The Advantage-2's ability to process technical files with intelligence, speed and precision is what makes it so special. Each drilling axis can operate with three five-station tools changers. Signoscript's underside scriber and Signomat's part stamping unit can be attached to this drill axis. Part information is preserved even after galvanizing, blasting, and painting. Minimizing shop errors? Check. Advantage-2 uses carbide tooling to drill more holes and is more aggressive than any other drill. High torque drilling instruments have a thicker and more aggressive cut which removes more chips from each rotation. This drill can remove beams, channel and angle tubes as well as flat bars. Advantage-2's processing window is 44 inches wide by 18 inches high.

Multifunction

The ability to mill copes speeds up project completion times tremendously. Coupled with the Advantage-2 user-friendly Raptor 3D CAD/CAM software enables the operator to program parts quickly. Inspect, modify and export part information directly within the 3D platform. The biggest advantages of the Advantage-2 drill has been probably the scribing and the ability to mill slots, large lifting holes. I mean this really kind of sets this machine apart. With the scribing we're able to put piece marks and layout lines, center points. I mean having that flexibility to use it when we want to and make that decision has been really great.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 10mm diameter bar can be used to reinforce a beam's longitudinally, but this all depends on the beam's size, span, and the load placed over it. The designer determines the steel cross-section area required when designing.

Avoid drilling vertical holes through LVL beams if the beam width is less than 3-1/2 inches. Before drilling vertical holes through LVL beams, consult an engineer or an architect who is qualified in wood design.

Use a slow speed to drill. The slower a bit spins the more hot it becomes. And heat dulls bits quickly. It is a good idea for drill bits to be used at a slow speed when drilling through metal. Drill bits for hard metals such as steel and larger diameters require slower speeds.

A cobalt-blend drill bit is the best for drilling hardened metals or steel. This alloy includes 5% to 8% cobalt. The cobalt is a part of the steel mixture, so it doesn't wear away with a coating (like titanium bits).

To reduce the chance of the beam escaping from the concrete column, the development length is required. It acts as a support member for the reinforced beam within the concrete column.
